Nov. 15, ADDIS ABABA (Xinhua) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia stated on Tuesday that the BRICS mechanism benefits Ethiopia since it advances the foundation for South-South cooperation.

Addressing the Ethiopian chamber of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR), the lower chamber of the Ethiopian parliament, on Tuesday, the prime minister made the statements.

In response to inquiries from the Ethiopian parliament, Ahmed stated that the foreign policy and diplomatic stances of the East African nation are founded on mutual benefit, upholding the nation’s sovereignty and national interest while guaranteeing its socioeconomic, geographic, and historical advantages.

“Ethiopia is a member of the BRICS organization because it encourages cooperation between the South and the South.” “We feel that our membership in the BRICS would be an important impetus both for Ethiopia and other BRICS members, given Ethiopia’s significance within the framework of South-South cooperation,” Ahmed told the Ethiopian parliament.

He expressed his gratitude to the five BRICS nations for their backing of Ethiopia’s admission.

The presidents of the BRICS nations decided to extend invitations to six nations—Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—to join the club during the 15th BRICS Summit, which took place in August in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The six nations will become members on January 1, 2024.

Ahmed informed the Ethiopian parliament, “We hope our membership into the BRICS mechanism would be advantageous to Ethiopia.”

He emphasized that Ethiopia’s entry into BRICS is in keeping with the nation’s foreign policy goals and that the East African nation has no intention of supporting, opposing, or harming anyone.
