On Tuesday, Bob Lee, the founder of the tech firm Cash App, was stabbed to death in San Francisco. Police discovered the 43-year-old man around 2.35 a.m. and rushed him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Lee’s current employer, MobileCoin, as well as his father, Rick Lee, have both confirmed his death. The reason for the stabbing is unknown, and police have not released any information about potential suspects.

Bob Lee joined MobileCoin as a part-time advisor and early-stage investor in February 2021. He joined the cryptocurrency firm as chief product officer in November of the same year. He brought years of experience from previous jobs. Lee was the CEO of Present for six years prior to joining MobileCoin. Lee was also an SV Angel and SignalFire Limited Partner.

Lee is best known as the creator of Cash App; when Square launched Cash App in 2013, he was the chief technology officer. Previously, the mobile payment service was known as Square Cash.

Lee began his career with Redrock Communications in 1997 as a web developer. Over the years, he worked with a number of notable companies, including Capgemini, OCI, and AT&T. He worked as a staff software engineer at Google from 2004 to 2010, when he left to become the CTO of Square.

‘Bob was incredible.’

Since news of his death broke, tributes to the creator of Cash App have flooded social media.

The founder of MobileCoin, Joshua Goldbard, remembered him as a man who made friends wherever he went. He praised Lee as a “artist” in a series of tweets.

“Bob was a genius.” His thoughts were kaleidoscopic. Choose a topic, and Bob will be right there with you, telling you all of the ways he has already considered it. “It was a pleasure,” Goldbard wrote.

Bob Lee’s father lived with him. In a Facebook post about his son, he said, “Bob would give you the shirt off his back.” He never looked down on anyone and had a strict no-judgment policy. Bobby worked harder than anyone else and was the most intelligent person I’d ever met. “All who knew him will miss him.”
