Five people are killed in a bank shooting in Louisville, Kentucky

In an incident that was livestreamed on Instagram by a bank employee in Louisville, Kentucky, five people died.

Ages of the victims ranged from 40 to 64. One of the nine injured people was a brand-new police officer who had only joined the force two weeks prior.

The police officer underwent brain surgery but is remains in serious condition.

Within three minutes, police arrived, engaged the attacker in gunfire, and shot him dead.

The incident happened at the Old National Bank in the heart of the city at around 8:00 local time. (12:30 GMT).

When the attack started, Caleb Goodlett’s wife, a bank employee, barricaded herself inside the vault, he informed the local media.

Other witnesses provided details of the gunfire between police and the lone assailant.

Tommy Elliot, a senior vice-president at the bank, was one of the victims, according to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who called him a “incredible friend.”

According to Mr. Beshear, “Tommy Elliott helped me build my legal career, helped me win the governorship, and gave me advice on being a good dad.”

Nickolas Wilt, a 26-year-old Louisville Metro police officer, was the victim of a headshot.

Mr. Wilt graduated from the academy on March 31 and his brother is currently enrolled in the police academy, according to city councilman Anthony Piagentini, speaking to the Courier-Journal.

The attack was described as “an evil act of targeted violence” by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. The mayor mentioned that he had just been shot at himself.

A mentally ill individual barged into his campaign office last year and fired shots at him.

The bank’s ground-floor conference room was the scene of the initial gunfire, two survivors told WHAS-TV.

One of the men remarked, pointing to his shirt, “Whoever was next to me got shot; blood is on me from it.”

Connor Sturgeon, 25, was identified as the shooter, who according to authorities utilised an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle during the event and was live-streaming the shooting online.

Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said it was awful to know that the incident had been documented.

Owner of Instagram Meta claimed to have “quickly taken down the livestream of this tragic incident this morning.”

An online profile for the attacker identified him as an Old National Bank portfolio banker and syndications partner. After working there as an intern for three summers, he had become a full-time employee of the business last year.

According to officials, he had no prior interactions with law enforcement.

According to US media, he just received word from the bank that he would be let off and before reporting to work on Monday, he wrote a note outlining his preparations for the shooting.

At least 146 mass shootings, which are ones in which at least four people were shot, have occurred thus far in 2023, according to data collated by the Gun Violence Archive, including at least 15 since the beginning of April.

In a tweet posted on Monday, President Joe Biden urged Congress to enact gun control laws, saying that “too many Americans are paying the price of inaction with their lives.”

In 26 states, including Kentucky, most adults over 21 are permitted to buy and carry a handgun without a permit.
