According to local authorities, on Saturday, gunmen opened fire at a public swimming pool in Mexico, killing at least seven people, among them a kid.

According to a witness to the attacks, armed males entered the pool about 4:30 p.m. local time on Saturday and started shooting before causing damage to a store, security cameras, and a monitor before fleeing.

Social media footage included people screaming and hugging their kids while wearing bathing suits.

The attack, which happened in the city of Cortazar in the central state of Guanajuato, has prompted the deployment of the Mexican army and security personnel in an effort to find the shooters.

According to a statement from the municipal authorities, when local security personnel arrived at the scene they discovered dead corpses and shell casings, including one child under the age of seven.

One person was critically injured and sent to the hospital in addition to the seven fatalities, it continued.

Authorities said they are still looking into the motivation despite the fact that no one has been arrested as of yet.

A perilous location

Many of the leading automakers in the world have production facilities in Guanajuato, a significant hub for agricultural and manufacturing.

However, it has a history of violent episodes and has recently been rocked by vicious turf fights between competing drug gangs.

Drug cartels are drawn to it for the same reason automakers are: the road and rail networks that run directly to the US border.

Since assuming office in late 2018, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has had difficulty addressing gang violence, according to Reuters.

Despite a recent minor decline in homicides, Lopez Obrador’s term is expected to be the bloodiest in recent memory.
