Volker Türk, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Calls for Increased Presence in China and India
In a recent statement, Volker Türk, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, emphasized the need to establish a stronger presence in China and India to promote and protect human rights. Türk highlighted the significance of these two populous nations in shaping global human rights discourse and called for greater engagement and cooperation.
Türk acknowledged the progress made by both countries in advancing human rights but stressed the importance of addressing ongoing challenges and ensuring the full enjoyment of human rights for all individuals. Recognizing the complexity and diversity of the issues at hand, Türk emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach, combining dialogue, capacity-building, and technical assistance.
China and India, as major global powers and influential regional players, have a crucial role to play in promoting and protecting human rights on a global scale. Türk stressed that by strengthening their collaboration with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), China and India can contribute significantly to the advancement of human rights principles, both within their borders and internationally.
To effectively achieve this goal, Türk called for enhanced cooperation with relevant government entities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. He highlighted the importance of fostering an environment that encourages open dialogue and constructive engagement, allowing for the exchange of ideas and experiences.
By establishing a stronger presence in China and India, the UN can further facilitate meaningful progress in human rights, working closely with national institutions and civil society actors. Türk expressed optimism about the potential positive impact of a deeper partnership between the UN and these nations, emphasizing the need for a joint commitment to human rights values.
This initiative aligns with the UN’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence and engagement in regions where human rights challenges persist. By actively working with governments and stakeholders, the UN aims to contribute to the promotion of human rights, justice, and equality worldwide.
