The shooting occurred inside Josey High School, located at 1701 15th St. Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree confirmed that the victim sustained a gunshot wound to a finger but is in stable condition and receiving medical attention. The school district has assured the public that the shooter is not believed to be near the campus.

According to Sheriff Roundtree, both the victim and the shooter are students at the school. They were involved in an altercation that escalated into gunfire, with some of the incident captured on video. As a precautionary measure, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has requested parents to report to Josey’s football stadium to reunite with their children.

Following the shooting, the school campus was placed on lockdown, and law enforcement officers blocked 15th Street. Nearby Murphey Middle School was also secured, and Augusta University received an alert due to its proximity to Josey High School. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, and Richmond County Marshal’s Office, responded to the scene. Tactical gear was observed on some of the law enforcement officers present. Additionally, a Central EMS ambulance was on-site.

During lunchtime, young people gathered in the school parking lot, observing the law enforcement activity. Unfortunately, violence is not unfamiliar to Josey High School. Just the day before, a brawl occurred during the transition to class after breakfast, resulting in several arrests. Similar incidents have been reported in other high schools in Augusta and surrounding regions since the start of the academic year.
