Ali Sabry, Sri Lanka’s minister of foreign affairs, stated on Tuesday that the country’s cabinet had approved a plan to offer free visas to visitors from seven nations for a period of five months: India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. According to Sabry, the trial experiment for the free visa travel started immediately and will run through March 31.

The goal of this action, according to Sri Lanka’s tourism ministry, is to draw more visitors to the nation. According to the ministry as stated by Sri Lankan media, “We are expecting to increase tourist arrivals to five million over the coming years.”

The action is also anticipated to save the travelers money and time spent on visa applications.

The proposal to grant free tourist visas to visitors from five nations was given to the Cabinet, the ministry of tourism said last week. The Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Tourism and Lands Harin Fernando, Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry allegedly jointly delivered the cabinet paper.

The Cabinet also suggested putting in place an electronic ticketing system soon for the majority of the nation’s tourist attractions, the ministry told local media.
