Vice captain Shadab Khan of Pakistan was forced to leave the field due to a head injury on Friday during their World Cup 2023 match against South Africa at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Later, Usama Mir took his place, making history as the tournament’s first-ever substitute for a concussion.

Shadab attempted to run out Quinton de Kock in the opening over of South Africa’s pursuit of 271, but he landed awkwardly on his head and shoulder, needing emergency medical attention. It took some time for him to lie still on the ground before someone came with a stretcher. But later, Shadab, whose condition was initially thought to be a possible neck strain, stood up and walked carefully towards the dressing room while keeping his head straight.

After coming back onto the field for a short while, the vice captain was finally declared ineligible to play the rest of the match, with Mir being designated as the replacement.

“In the current play against South Africa, Pakistan has substituted Shadab Khan due to a concussion. Shadab will be replaced by Usama Mir, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced in a statement.

“As Shadab fielded, he struck his head. He played for a short while, but the Pakistani team medical panel opted to replace him following a comprehensive evaluation. The match referee granted the substitute’s request.”

Mir was then brought into the attack and he removed Rassie van der Dussen to end South Africa’s vital 54-run third-wicket stand. Mir is supported by Pakistani veterans and experts to be included in the playing XI for the World Cup. After giving up 1 for 82 and 0 for 55 in Pakistan’s two defeats to Australia and Afghanistan, he was early removed from the game.
