The second season of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel, is scheduled to premiere on television in 2019. According to Variety, Casey Bloys, the head of HBO, revealed at an event in New York on Thursday that the much anticipated second season of the show will debut in the “early summer” of 2024.

Regarding Season 2 of House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon debuted on August 21, 2022, and quickly after, HBO announced that Season 2 would be ordered. The show garnered the highest viewership of any new original series in the premium broadcaster’s history, with “over 20 million viewers across linear, on demand, and HBO Max platforms in the US, based on a combination of Nielsen data and first party data.”

Eight episodes total, two fewer than in Season 1. As to a report published by Deadline, HBO is also contemplating the renewal of Game of Thrones‘ prequel spin-off for a third season, as part of the show’s long-term strategy.

Insiders claim that a significant battle and other story points that were initially planned for Season 2 are now shifting to Season 3. Furthermore, according to sources, House of the Dragon will probably run for four seasons, though this is still up in the air.

Did strikes cause any delays?

In April, the second season of House of the Dragon began filming at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios. The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and the Writers Guild of America strike also affected the production. The second season’s screenplay was already locked before the writers’ strike started, though, which was the cause for the same. Furthermore, the performers’ contracts were with UK guild Equity rather than SAG-AFTRA.

Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans are among the ensemble cast members of House of the Dragon.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is a prequel that tells the chronicle of House Targaryen 200 years before the events depicted in the eight-season finale of Game of Thrones in 2019.
