Ukraine Accuses Itself For The Goddess Kali Tweet With “WE REGRET…”

Ukraine’s Kyiv Emine Dzhaparova, the country’s deputy foreign minister, expressed “regret” on Tuesday after the country’s defence ministry tweeted a picture of a woman atop explosion smoke. The message sparked controversy, with social media users pointing out how similar it was to a picture of Goddess Kali.

Emine Dzhaparova, Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister, stated that the European nation “respects unique Indian culture and highly appreciates support from India” and that it “regrets” the defence ministry’s representation of goddess Kali in a “distorted manner.”

She stated that the image has been taken down.

We apologise that @DefenceU distortedly portrayed the Hindu deity Kali. The people of #Ukraine respect the distinctive culture of India and much value assistance. The image has already been taken down. is committed to fostering friendship and cooperation among people, Dzhaparova tweeted.

On April 30, the Ukrainian Defence Ministry tweeted with the subject line “Work of art,” posting a photograph of a blast alongside an improvised painting by Maksym Palenko.

The artist portrayed the explosion in the image in an aggressive yet original way by fusing the face and features of the Hindu goddess “Maa Kali” with those of American actress Marilyn Monroe in her signature “flying skirt” position.

After tweeting the image, there was a significant outcry, which compelled the Defence Ministry of Defence to remove the tweet.

One person tweeted, “Shocking! Maa Kali is portrayed in a humiliating stance on the official Twitter account of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry. This is not an artistic piece. Our faith is serious business. Remove that and apologize to @DefenceU”

Hurting the feelings of 1.4 billion Indians is not acceptable, tweeted another user. The Ukrainian defence ministry’s show of Hinduphobia is egregious. Please take this out.

Since the beginning of the Ukraine War in February of last year, Dzhaporava was the first Ukrainian minister to visit India. The Ukrainian minister spoke with Meenakashi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs, during his visit.
