In Manipur, India, ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki populations has resulted in at least 98 fatalities and 310 injuries. There have been over 3,700 FIRs filed in connection with the violence, and 65 persons have been taken into custody. In the state’s relief camps, there are 36,450 individuals. Although certain districts no longer have curfews, tensions are still very high. The unrest started on May 3rd during a demonstration against a court-ordered modification to the state’s reservation system. An internet ban and a curfew were imposed by the authorities. There have been tens of thousands of displaced persons.

A month after confrontations between the Meitei and Kuki communities erupted, authorities in Manipur said that ethnic violence had resulted in at least 98 fatalities and 310 injuries.

According to Manipur security advisor Kuldiep Singh, a total of 3,734 FIRs relating to the violence have been filed, and 65 persons have been detained for their involvement.

According to Singh, who spoke to news agency ANI, “The total number of arson cases registered has reached 4014 and at least 36,450 displaced people are taking shelter in 274 relief camps across the state.”

Following days of uncertainty on the death toll, officials announced on May 22 that 74 people had died. This was followed by the chief minister N Biren Singh on May 28, who claimed that 40 Kuki militants had been killed during a crackdown by security troops the previous four days.

Since hundreds have fled the affected districts and curfew restrictions are still in place, the majority of the bodies of those slain in the violence are still unclaimed at mortuaries in Imphal and Churachandpur, according to the officials.
