OMG 2, the latest comedy-drama starring Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi, has made a remarkable start at the box office. The film, directed by Amit Rai, opened on Friday with an impressive collection of Rs 10.26 crore. Over the weekend, it continued to attract audiences and witnessed a phenomenal growth in its box office numbers.
Despite facing tough competition from Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, OMG 2 managed to collect Rs 15.30 crore on Saturday and Rs 17.55 crore on Sunday. This outstanding performance resulted in a total collection of Rs 43.11 crore over the first weekend.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to express his excitement about the film’s success. He described OMG 2 as a “smash hit” and highlighted its excellent trending and audience response. Adarsh also predicted that the film’s business on Independence Day would be huge, further boosting its box office performance.
Earlier, Adarsh had mentioned that OMG 2 heavily relies on word-of-mouth publicity, which would determine its fate at the box office. Despite being impacted by the Gadar 2 wave on its opening day, the film managed to fare better than expected. Adarsh noted that OMG 2 recorded better occupancy at prime multiplexes during evening and night shows, indicating solid growth over the weekend.
The positive word of mouth and acceptance from the audience played a significant role in OMG 2’s success. On the second day, the film showed excellent growth, collecting Rs 15.30 crore at the box office. This performance further solidified its position as a promising box office contender.
Film critic Saibal Chatterjee, in his review for NDTV, gave OMG 2 a rating of 2 out of 5 stars. While acknowledging Akshay Kumar’s flamboyant portrayal of God’s messenger in the film, Chatterjee questioned the need for divine intervention in everyday problems. Nevertheless, the presence of Akshay Kumar and the film’s box office potential were praised.
