Etna Eruption Forces Closure of Sicily’s Catania Airport

The Catania airport in Sicily, a popular tourist destination in Italy, has temporarily suspended all flights due to a recent eruption at Mount Etna. The eruption has resulted in the release of ash, posing risks to aviation safety. The airport authorities have taken this precautionary measure to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.

The airport operator announced that all flights have been suspended until 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) due to the falling ash. Initially, the suspension was planned until 1:00 pm, but the situation warranted an extension.

To ensure the safety of residents and visitors, Catania’s Mayor Enrico Trantino has also imposed a ban on the use of motorcycles and bicycles for the next 48 hours. This decision was made because several areas in the city are covered with a layer of volcanic ash, which can make roads slippery and increase the risk of accidents.

Mount Etna, standing at an impressive height of 3,324 meters (nearly 11,000 feet), is Europe’s tallest active volcano. Over the past 500,000 years, it has experienced frequent eruptions. The recent eruption has once again reminded locals and tourists of the volcano’s unpredictable nature.

This is not the first time Catania airport has been affected by volcanic activity. On May 21, the airport was closed for a day due to another eruption. With approximately 10 million passengers transiting through the airport last year, it serves as a vital transportation hub for the eastern part of Sicily.
