Mark Sheehan, a co-founder and guitarist for the Irish rock group The Script, has passed away.

Following a brief illness, the 46-year-old passed away at a hospital on Friday, the band reported.

In 2001, Sheehan, drummer Glen Power, and vocalist Danny O’Donoghue founded the band.

Sheehan was described as a c” in a statement posted to the group’s social media accounts.

It requested that the privacy of his family and bandmates be respected.

Sheehan’s fellow performers from his era were quick to pay tribute to him.

The Irish presenter Laura Whitmore commented on Instagram, “Thinking of you all at this time.

You could not meet a nicer or more talented man than Mark.

The Irish pop duo Jedward paid tribute to Mark, one of the most talented musicians from The Script, one of the most recognizable Irish bands of our generation, on Instagram, writing: “Everyone in the Irish music industry and worldwide mourn your loss RIP Mark such a talented musician from The Script one of the most iconic Irish groups of our generation.”

Kodaline, an Irish rock band that was also honored, tweeted: “So sorry to hear (of) the passing of Mark Sheehan.”

Sheehan, according to Ireland’s president Michael D. Higgins, is a “outstanding” illustration of Irish musical accomplishment on the international arena.

The fact that The Script experienced such global success, including six number one albums in the UK and a number three album in the US, was a testament to the creativity and perfection that Mark and his comrades in The Script sought, he said.

Sheehan was born in the Mount Brown neighborhood of The Liberties of Dublin on October 29, 1976. He was married to Reena Sheehan, with whom he has three children.

From a young age, he was passionate about music and became a singer, songwriter, and guitarist.

Alongside The Script frontman O’Donoghue, he was a member of the band Mytown from 1996 to 2001.

With Sheehan on guitar, O’Donoghue on vocals, and Power on drums, The Script formed in Dublin in 2001.

After agreeing to a record deal with Sony Music Group, the group relocated to London.

There, they published “We Cry,” their debut studio album, which went on to become the top seller in both Ireland and the UK.

The following three of their albums, Science & Faith, #3, and No Sound Without Silence, all peaked at the top of the charts in both nations.

In the US, Science & Faith peaked at number three, and in Australia, it peaked at number two.

Since then, the group has carried on with its worldwide tours and the production of original music CDs with pop-rock undertones and Irish themes.

They are renowned for penning songs that come straight from the heart, such as “If You Could See Me Now,” which deals with the passing of the parents of singer O’Donoghue and both of Sheehan.

Over the past year, fans have questioned Sheehan’s brief absence from the stage.

Sheehan was absent for the band’s US leg of the tour in 2022. According to O’Donoghue, his bandmate took a sabbatical to spend time with his family.

He described them as “a band of brothers” that “stick together no matter what” and said that they were in support of Sheehan’s choice in Sunday World.

The Script had a run-in with the royal family in 2013, when the Queen stopped by the BBC’s Broadcasting House, witnessed a performance by The Script, and had a quick talk with singer O’Donoghue.

Sheehan claimed that when he first learned of the royal engagement, he believed “people were pulling a fast one on us.”

Later this year, The Script will tour with American musician P!nk around Europe.
