“Moment Of Pride”: Garba Is Now Included On The UNESCO List Of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has included the traditional dance form of Gujarat, known as Garba, to its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity.

The Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity, maintained by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation, now includes the Garba dance genre.

The inclusion of Garba on the list, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “inspires us to preserve and promote our heritage for future generations”. Modi remarked on X, “Congratulations for this worldwide recognition.”

The intangible heritage components that serve to highlight the significance of this legacy and its diversity are what comprise Unesco’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

“Garba’s inclusion in the Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage list is truly a proud moment for Gujarat and India,” wrote Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendera Patel on X. The globe has bestowed this accolade upon the age-old Indian culture.”

In a post on the subject, Telangana BJP chairman G Kishan Reddy said that the listing was evidence of the “tireless efforts of this government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to showcase our rich culture, traditions, and heritage to the world”.
